Original ‘small England’ loco Prince, dating back to 1863, is in traffic the week of 20th September running some Woodland Wanderer services to Tan y Bwlch prior to bowing out of service. The timetable and booking is here.
Having returned to traffic in time to celebrate Steam 150 in 2013 following a Ffestiniog Railway Society sponsored overhaul, our ‘old gent’ is now required to undergo the mandatory ten year boiler retube and inspection.
Whilst normally reserved for special duties, Prince has been at the forefront of services in the last couple of years as the COVID safe service has been most appropriate to use the smaller engines on compartment trains to Tan y Bwlch. Prince has put in a sterling service running many thousands of miles, taking its toll on the loco.
Fundraising for Prince has already commenced with the on train envelope appeal dedicated to raising funds – this has already raised some £3,000 but much more will be required. It is possible to donate online here and a full appeal will be launched presently.
