The last train (a special) ran through to Blaenau before the resumption of daily services at the end of March.
Moelwyn Tunnel was completed in 1978 as part of the deviation to bypass Tan y Grisiau reservoir to get back to Blaenau Ffestiniog, finally in 1982. The tunnel entrances remained in unclad concrete and there has always been the intention to treat them to cladding in the style of a traditional tunnel such as Garnedd.
Thanks to a sponsor, work began before Christmas to construct the portal cladding. This will be progressed again now the Christmas week services have ceased and the line is now closed again.
