New Volunteers Weekend 16-17 April 2016

New Volunteers Weekend 16-17 April 2016

Many of the railway’s staff are volunteers – they carry out a great variety of tasks, they may stay clean or get dirty, they may sit at desks or work physically very hard, they can use their brains as well as their muscles. Volunteers work in the railway’s cafés and shops, staff and signal trains, drive and fire locomotives, lay and maintain track, build or restore buildings, carriages and locomotives…

If you like the idea of working on the railway there will be something to grab your interest. It can also give you something different from everyday life – we have policemen staffing trains, bank managers building carriages and ‘gentlemen of the cloth’ firing locomotives…

Why do people do it..? Interest in the line and a desire to support heritage is one reason, a wish to see an historic Railway Company live on into the future is another, but you could be more mercenary – the skills and experience you gain on the FR can help you advance in your own life. The railway does not exist in isolation and each task will require some form of training. Several high-ranking managers and other staff on the national railway system got their first experience of railway work in the top left hand corner of Wales…

However, if you were to ask the volunteers what their main motivation is, the most frequent answers will probably be – “it’s rather fun”, “the varied social life and the friends that can be made”, plus the overall sense of making a difference…
